The Eclipse Shape Catalog

Eclipse dinnerware is pretty common, especially out here in California. Most of it is not particularly valuable. Teacups, until recently, would sell for less than what they would cost new. Some of the rarest things sell for $300 or more, which really isn't that much compared to what the other dinnerware people pay. Check out what the poor Russel Wright collectors spend on their collections!

Serving pieces with obvious utility are not very rare, with the possible exception of the canisters. Pieces with limited utility, such as the egg cups and the candlesticks are rare. Well-reinforced, small, one-piece things are much more common (such as the divided dish) than pieces with lids and large, fragile things. Some pieces seem to be redundant, and are rare. The lunch plate is a tiny bit different then the plate sizes in the starter set, and it is rare. Likewise, the coffee cups are hardly different from the tea cups, and they are rare.

The most common pieces are the ones that were included in the starter set:

Count Part Desc Patterns
4 1806 Bread and Butter Plate 6" DEOPS
4 1811 Dinner Plate 10 1/2" DEOPS
4 1820 Teacup DEOPS
4 1821 Saucer DEOPS

The starter set was $14.95 in 1954, $16.95 in 1957, and was $17.95 in 1961. Pomegranate was $1 less than the other Eclipse shapes in 1954.

Also common are the things included in the 50 piece set:

Count Part Desc Patterns
8 1806 Bread Plate 6" DEOPS
8 1808 Salad Plate 7 1/2" DEOPS
8 1811 Dinner Plate 10 1/2" DEOPS
8 1820 Teacup DEOPS
8 1821 Saucer DEOPS
8 1801 Fruit Bowl DEOPS
1 1872 Medium Oval Platter DEOPS
1 1861 Vegetable Dish DEOPS

There are some very rare special promotion items, and items sold under the Gladding McBean name:

Tiles
The tiles are square. An ad for them is shown in the picture section. These are really rare, and I don't have any. A reader once sent me a letter saying that he had them on a pink base glazed tile.
Table cloth
Napkins
I've seen these once. They seemed like a coarse, fairly open-weave linen, but this could just be because they were so old and worn. They had Starbursts, but the colors were quite different than the dishes, probably due to fade.

Trivet
The trivet is a 6 1/2" octagon and was a special promotional item. On the back it is stamped GLADDING MCBEAN, HERMOSA, TRADE MARK.

Glassware
Libby and other companies made glassware that matches Starburst.
